Regular Meeting
A meeting of the Board of Education was held in the Pine River-Backus High School Media Center at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009 with Chair Gaffey presiding.
Members present: Katy Botz, Jim Coffland, Garny Gaffey, Barb Hines, John Palmer, Jerry Peterson, Sandy Poferl and Superintendent Catherine Bettino.
The floor was opened for comments from the public on agenda items.
Student Council - Jean Grev, Student Council Advisor, reported on the 9-11 assembly and planned Homecoming activities.
Employee of the month -Jean Grev, High School English Teacher and Student Council Advisor
Spotlight on Education - Systems Accountability Report, Steve Norlin
Motion by Peterson, second by Poferl, to approve the agenda and addendum. All voted aye and the motion carried.
Motion by Hines, second by Palmer, to approve the minutes of the regular board meeting on August 17, 2009. All voted aye and the motion carried.
Administrative team, director, enrollment and committee reports were heard.
Consent calendar - Motion by Botz, second by Peterson, to approve the consent calendar, which consisted of the following items:
Approve bills presented (checks 40072 to 40270 totaling $867,192.99); approve the investment report; approve the treasurer's report; approve the report on electronic fund transfers and other banking transactions and accept monetary awards and donations as presented; and
Approve the hiring of Nicole Bruns as Junior High Volleyball Coach for the 2009-10 season;
Approve posting for a Paraprofessional in the Elementary for 6.5 hours daily;
Approve a child care leave of absence for Melanie Lindquist, High School French Teacher, from approximately January 22, 2010 to April 2, 2010 and authorize posting for a long-term substitute teacher; and
Approve posting of Assistant Wrestling Coach position for the 2009-10 season.
All voted aye and the motion carried.
Board discussion on the following items:
2009 Pay 2010 Levy. Jolene Bengtson, Business Manager, presented preliminary levy figures. Recommendation is for the board to certify the maximum amount as calculated by Minnesota Department of Education. The final levy will be certified and the truth in taxation hearing will occur at the December 21, 2009 regular board meeting.
NJPA board election. NJPA has a seat on their Board of Directors opening in January 2010 for a two-year term. There were no board members interested in seeking a nomination.
MSBA 2009 delegate election. Election forms for the MSBA delegate election were passed out to board members before the meeting.
Staff development goals. The list of staff development goals for 2009-10 as compiled by the Districtwide Leadership Team was discussed.
Motion by Botz, second by Palmer, certify the preliminary levy at the maximum amount as calculated by the Minnesota Department of Education. All voted aye and the motion carried.
Motion by Poferl, second by Coffland, to approve the Systems Accountability Report. All voted aye and the motion carried.
Motion by Hines, second by Coffland, to approve the 2009-10 staff development goals as presented. All voted aye and the motion carried.
Open forum - The meeting was opened for comments from the public.
Motion by Peterson, second by Hines, to close the meeting per Minnesota State Law 13D.03 in order to consider strategy for labor negotiations with Pine River-Backus Education Minnesota and Service Employees International Union, Local #284. All voted aye and the motion carried.
The meeting was closed at 8:18 p.m.
The meeting reopened at 9:27 p.m.
The next regular board meeting will be October 19, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Media Center.
Chair Gaffey adjourned the meeting 9:28 p.m.
